For the series conversion of some units of the popular V-160 family, DB ordered high-performance turbines of the type AVCO Lycoming T53-L13 from the then Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz plants. From 1970 onwards, these units were used in locomotives renumbered as Class 210. The locomotives of running numbers 210 001–008 were quickly put into service on their planned main lines.
The daily service included the express train "TEE Bavaria" as well as other heavy express trains between the Bavarian capital Munich and Lindau.
