The 212 series is regarded as a direct sub-series of the V 100, as it was built according to its development requirements. Only a more powerful engine with 993 kW was used in the machine. Commissioned from 1962 to 1965 as BR V 100.20, it was also intended for main and steep line service, in contrast to the V 100.10 used in branch line service. The locomotives were considered to be very robust and reliable, and they achieved high, trouble-free mileage. The machines were widespread throughout almost all of Germany.
